Our Mission-Driven Initiatives
VFOD raises funds to support mission-driven programs that expand access to dance, nurture local youth talent, and bring the performing arts to the heart of the community.
Vail Youth Ballet Company
Founded by VFOD in 1996, the Vail Youth Ballet Company (VYBC) provides advanced dancers from Vail Valley Academy of Dance (VVAD) with additional training and performance opportunities. Admission is by audition, and company members commit to an elevated level of dance study. VYBC dancers perform in the annual Nutcracker Ballet at the Vilar Performing Arts Center and a Spring Showcase. Under the artistic direction of Ashley Calligan, VYBC has produced graduates who have gone on to prestigious ballet programs and professional dance careers.​VFOD provides vital support to the VYBC by funding financial aid, performance opportunities, and dancer education. Our efforts help young dancers in Eagle County access world-class performing arts venues, train with esteemed guest choreographers and instructors, and take classes at the VVAD. We also provide opportunities for master classes and experiential education, including a transformative trip to New York City. Because of our support, dancers in rural Eagle County can experience exceptional training, perform on professional stages, and immerse themselves in the performing arts.
The Nutcracker Ballet
VFOD is more than just a sponsor for talented young dancers. We’re a community of artists, educators, and supporters who believe in the transformative power of ballet and the performing arts. Each year, our efforts culminate in the annual production of The Nutcracker at the world-renowned Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek. This beloved holiday classic draws over 2,000 patrons each year and features nearly 100 performers—including youth dancers from Eagle County (ages 8–18), community members, and professional dancers—all under the direction of
Artistic Director Ashley Calligan.

We bring the joy of dance to Eagle County through vibrant community events that inspire a love for the arts. From our beloved Nutcracker Ballet to the lively Valentine’s Ball and our free Nutcracker-themed movie screening and pop-up performances, we create inclusive experiences that welcome everyone to celebrate the magic of dance.
